When I started working with an extruder to make large vessels, I had a problem with cracks in hollow extrusions which was being caused by the braces that are used in extruder sets. This is an issue that most ceramic artists seem to encounter. It was preventing me from fully exploring the work that I wanted to do using extruded ceramics.

Thanks to a workshop with Michael Sherrill, I learned about the brace system that he had engineered to eliminate cracking. After getting a set of dies from Mud Tools, I realized that not only was cracking no longer an issue, but that I now was able to create consistent extrusions that could be easily carved into many different shapes.

I was then able to make the body of work that I had envisioned, and one of these pieces was accepted into the the 2011 NCECA Biennial. I don't think that I could have produced that level of work using an extruder if I hadn't been able to overcome the technical issues that I had been experiencing.
